We studied the fine-scale behaviour of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus around gillnets in North Carolina, USA, during May and June 2002. We made observations from an overhead digital video camera, suspended from a helium-filled aerostat, tethered 70 m above a fishing vessel. We positioned the camera above a gillnet set for Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus maculatus. We observed frequent encounters (n = 36) and interactions (n = 27) between dolphins and the net, but no dolphins became entangled. Most dolphins diverted their course around the net, but on nine occasions we observed dolphins engaging in depredation. We conclude that interactions between dolphins and these gillnets are common, but that entanglement is rare."

Abstract Bottlenose dolphins are unusual among non-human mammals in their ability to learn new sounds. This study investigates the importance of vocal learning in the development of dolphin signature whistles and the influence of social interactions on that process. We used focal animal behavioral follows to observe six calves in Sarasota Bay, Fla., recording their social associations during their first summer, and their signature whistles during their second. The signature whistles of five calves were determined. Using dynamic time warping (DTW) of frequency contours, the calvesrsquo signature whistles were compared to the signature whistles of several sets of dolphins: their own associates, the other calvesrsquo associates, Tampa Bay dolphins, and captive dolphins. Whistles were considered similar if their DTW similarity score was greater than those of 95% of the whistle comparisons. Association was defined primarily in terms of time within 50 m of the mother/calf pair. On average, there were six dolphins with signature whistles similar to the signature whistles of each of the calves. These were significantly more likely to be Sarasota Bay resident dolphins than non-Sarasota dolphins, and (though not significantly) more likely to be dolphins that were within 50 m of the mother and calf less than 5% of the time. These results suggest that calves may model their signature whistles on the signature whistles of members of their community, possibly community members with whom they associate only rarely.

Genetic evidence for sex-biased dispersal in resident bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus).

Moller LM, Beheregaray LB.

Marine Mammal Research Group, Graduate School of the Environment, Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW, 2109, Australia. luciana.moller@gse.mq.edu.au

In most mammals males usually disperse before breeding, while females remain in their natal group or area. However, in odontocete cetaceans behavioural and/or genetic evidence from populations of four species indicate that both males and females remain in their natal group or site. For coastal resident bottlenose dolphins field data suggest that both sexes are philopatric to their natal site. Assignment tests and analyses of relatedness based on microsatellite markers were used to investigate this hypothesis in resident bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops aduncus, from two small coastal populations of southeastern Australia. Mean corrected assignment and mean relatedness were higher for resident females than for resident males. Only 8% of resident females had a lower probability than average of being born locally compared to 33% of resident males. Our genetic data contradict the hypothesis of bisexual philopatry to natal site and suggest that these bottlenose dolphins are not unusual amongst mammals, with females being the more philopatric and males the more dispersing sex.

Abstract

In mirror mark tests dolphins twist, posture, and engage in open-mouth and head movements, often repetitive. Because postures and an open mouth are also dolphin social behaviours, we used self-view television as a manipulatable mirror to distinguish between self-examination and social behavior. Two dolphins were exposed to alternating real-time self-view ('mirror mode') and playback of the same to determine if they distinguished between them. The adult male engaged in elaborate open-mouth behaviors in mirror mode, but usually just watched when playing back the same material. Mirror mode behavior was also compared to interacting with real dolphins (controls). Mark tests were conducted, as well as switches from front to side self-views to see if the dolphins turned. They presented marked areas to self-views to see if the dolphins turned. They presented marked areas to the self-view television and turned. The results suggest self-examination over social behavior.

Memory for lists of sounds by the bottle-nosed dolphin: convergence of memory processes with humans?

Thompson RK, Herman LM.

After listening to a list of as many as six discriminably different 2-second sounds, a bottle-nosed dolphin classified a subsequent probe sound as either 'old' (from the list) or 'new.' The probability of recognizing an old probe was close to 1.0 if it matched the most recent sound in the list and decreased sigmoidally for successively earlier list sounds. Memory span was estimated to be at least four sounds. Overall probabilities of correctly classifying old and new probes corresponded closely, as if recognition decisions were made according to an optimum maximum likelihood criterion. The data bore many similarities to data obtained from humans tested on probe recognition tasks.

Mirror self-recognition in the bottlenose dolphin: a case of cognitive convergence.

Reiss D, Marino L.

Osborn Laboratories of Marine Sciences, New York Aquarium, Wildlife Conservation Society, Brooklyn, NY 11224, USA. dlr28@columbia.edu

The ability to recognize oneself in a mirror is an exceedingly rare capacity in the animal kingdom. To date, only humans and great apes have shown convincing evidence of mirror self-recognition. Two dolphins were exposed to reflective surfaces, and both demonstrated responses consistent with the use of the mirror to investigate marked parts of the body. This ability to use a mirror to inspect parts of the body is a striking example of evolutionary convergence with great apes and humans."

Environment: whale-call response to masking boat noise.

Foote AD, Osborne RW, Hoelzel AR.

School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, University of Durham, Durham DH1 3LE, UK.

Background noise can interfere with the detection and discrimination of crucial signals among members of a species. Here we investigate the vocal behaviour in the presence and absence of whale-watcher boat traffic of three social groups (pods) of killer whales (Orcinus orca) living in the nearshore waters of Washington state. We find longer call durations in the presence of boats for all three pods, but only in recent recordings made following a period of increasing boat traffic. This result indicates that these whales adjust their behaviour to compensate for anthropogenic noise once it reaches a threshold level."

Evidence for infanticide in bottlenose dolphins: an explanation for violent interactions with harbour porpoises?

Patterson IA, Reid RJ, Wilson B, Grellier K, Ross HM, Thompson PM.

SAC Veterinary Service Division (Inverness), Drummondhill, UK.

Most harbour porpoises found dead on the north-east coast of Scotland show signs of attack by sympatric bottlenose dolphins, but the reason(s) for these violent interactions remain(s) unclear. Post-mortem examinations of stranded bottlenose dolphins indicate that five out of eight young calves from this same area were also killed by bottlenose dolphins. These data, together with direct observations of an aggressive interaction between an adult bottlenose dolphin and a dead bottlenose dolphin calf, provide strong evidence for infanticide in this population. The similarity in the size range of harbour porpoises and dolphin calves that showed signs of attack by bottlenose dolphins suggests that previously reported interspecific interactions could be related to this infanticidal behaviour. These findings appear to provide the first evidence of infanticide in cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises). We suggest that infanticide must be considered as a factor shaping sociality in this and other species of cetaceans, and may have serious consequences for the viability of small populations.

The ethological analysis of imitation.

Miklosi A.

Department of Ethology, Eotvos University, Budapest, Hungary.

Theorists and experimental researchers have long debated whether animals are able to imitate. A variety of definitions of imitation have been proposed to describe this complex form of social learning. Experimental research on imitation has often been hampered by either a too loose 'anthropomorphic' approach or by too narrow 'behaviourist' definitions. At present neither associative nor cognitive theories are able to offer an exhaustive explanation of imitation in animals. An ethological approach to imitation offers a different perspective. By integrating questions on function, mechanism, development and evolution one can identify possible directions for future research. At present, however, we are still far from developing a comprehensive theory of imitation. A functional approach to imitation shows that, despite some evidence for imitative learning in food processing in apes, such learning has not been shown to be involved in the social transmission of either tool-use skills or communicative signals. Recently developed procedures offer possible ways of clarifying the role of imitation in tool use and visual communication. The role of imitation in explorative play in apes is also investigated and the available data suggest that copying during play might represent a behavioural homologue of human imitation. It is proposed that the ability to copy the behaviour of a companion is under a strong genetic influence in many social species. Many important factors have not been examined experimentally, e.g. the effect of the demonstrator, the influence of attention and memory and the ability to generalize. The potential importance of reinforcement raises the possibility that copying abilities serving divergent functions might be partly under the control of different mechanisms.

A co-evolutionary model of mutualism from a commensal association on Lotka-Volterra dynamics.

Sikder A, Roy AB.

Department of Mathematics, Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India.

This paper considers a Lotka-Volterra type of model of competition between a commensal pair of species and a mutualistic pair, presumed to have descended from a single ancestral pair of species. The species are behaviourally isolated but compete for resources. We have studied in detail the effects of the benefits of mutualism over commensalism. Specifically, it is shown that co-evolution of the mutalistic pair from the commensal association is not possible if (i) some of the interacting parameters coincide for the two pairs, or (ii) mutualists suffer more from competition, or (iii) mutualists produce a smaller competitive effect. If the costs of mutualism are density-independent, co-evolution of the mutualism is possible provided (i) the specific growth rate(s) of one or both of the mutualistic species is positive at the steady state of the commensal pair and (ii) the specific growth rate(s) of one or both of the commensal species is positive at the steady state of the mutualistic pair. Lastly, whenever the mutualists co-exist with the commensalists and the feasible interior equilibrium of the model is unstable, we have shown that the co-evolutionary model of mutualism collapses to the stable two-species mutualistic relationship, causing the ultimate extinction of both the species of the original commensal association.

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM (such as nvidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 7000 or better) then you need at least:

* 600 MHz P3 processor
* 256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000

If you have a non-T&L capable video card (such as TNT2 or Intel Integrated for example) then you need at least:

* 1.5 GHz processor
* 256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000

Recommended video cards (and the more video memory the better):

* ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
* Nvidia Geforce 4 or FX series cards

From the nVidia website's glossary
Transform & Lighting (T&L) definition: Two separate engines on the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that provide for a powerful, balanced PC platform and enable extremely high polygon count scenes. Transform performance determines how complex objects can be and how many can appear in a scene without sacrificing frame rate. Lighting techniques add to a scene's realism by changing the appearance of objects based on light sources.

Some other notes about video cards:
T&L video cards started shipping around 3 years ago, so if you got your computer in the last couple of years you should check and see if you have a T&L card.

It's always a good idea to make sure you have the most current drivers for your video cards. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia site or the ATI for the latest drivers for those video cards."

I'm pretty sure that these programs don't read the offset value to the first EXIF ifd header, instead they may assume that it begins at offset 8. For keeping the makernotes, Exifer moves the first ifd header to a new position (this corresponds to the TIFF specification)"

Jan's Tech Blog: [Blog Basics] Feed: Set Content Free

Jan's Tech Blog: [Blog Basics] Feed: Set Content Free: "RSS: 非Blog不嫁?
